ABA Survey Finds Online, Mobile Most Popular Banking Channels

Seven out of 10 Americans said they most often access their bank accounts via online and mobile channels, according to a new ABA/Morning Consult survey released yesterday. Forty-two percent said they most frequently use their laptop or PC to access their bank account, while 30 percent say mobile is their go-to method, up 4 percent from last year’s survey.

Mobile had the highest appeal among younger generational cohorts; 51 percent of those aged 18 to 34 and 40 percent of those aged 18 to 34 said they used mobile the most. Meanwhile, those 45 and older said they preferred to use the internet.

The survey also found that almost one in five -- 18 percent -- still use their bank branch most often to access their bank accounts. “Mobile banking has truly gone mainstream in recent years and continues to gain traction among consumers of all ages,” said ABA SVP Nessa Feddis. “At the same time, banking in person at branches has consistently maintained its appeal to a large number of people. While many consumers have a favorite banking channel, we’re continuing to see most bank customers using a mix of the account management methods available to them.” Read more
