FinCEN Employee Arrested, Charged with Leaking SARs to Media

A senior official at the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network was arrested on Tuesday and charged yesterday with making unauthorized disclosures of suspicious activity reports filed by financial institutions. According to the criminal complaint, FinCEN employee Natalie Sours Edwards leaked confidential SARs related to the Russia investigation to a reporter at news site Buzzfeed.

“Protecting sensitive information is one of our most critical responsibilities, and it is a role that we take very seriously,” said Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Sigal Mandelker. U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman added that “we hope today’s charges remind those in positions of trust within government agencies that the unlawful sharing of sensitive documents will not be tolerated and will be met with swift justice.” Read more
