Bill would require review of alternatives before SIFI designation

A Senate bill with bipartisan backing seeks to make it mandatory for the Financial Stability Oversight Council to look into other options before designating a nonbank a systemically important financial institution. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, chairman of the Senate banking committee, said the proposal would improve the council's transparency and effectiveness.
